Axentowicz, Teodor(Polish, 1859-1938)
Teodor Axentowicz was born May 13, 1859 in Braşov, Romania.. Axentowicz was famous for his portraits and scenes of Hutsul life, set in the Carpathians. From 1879 to 1882 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From there he moved to Paris, where he continued his education until 1895, when his artistic career took off as an illustrator for 'Le monde illustre' doing popular copies of works by masters Botticelli, Titian, Valezquez, and Correggio. His portraiture career took off in London, England. In 1890 alone, he was commissioned to paint twelve portraits. His subjects included actress Sarah Bernhardt, Henrietta Fouquier, and Wladyslaw Oslawski.
His canvases were truly unique and advanced the art of portraiture during his time. The use of pastels created a lovely and delicate representation of the many women he depicted. Axentowicx drew inspiration from artists like J. Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and G.J. Boldiniego and painted with a narrow range of colors, employing subtle feminine qualities, highlighting delicateness and a sentimental character. His artwork was exhibited domestically and internationally, reaching Chicago in 1927.
Axentowicz was also a professor at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts and very active in the local society, cooperating with various societies devoted to propagation of arts and crafts. In 1897 he founded an artistic conservatory for women and soon afterwards became one of the founders of the Sztuka society. He died August 26, 1938 in Kraków.
