| | Blashfield, Edwin Howland | (American, 1848-1936) |
|
| | An American painter who worked mainly in murals, Blashfield’s style was greatly influenced by the murals in Paris’ Pantheon, especially the paintings of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, Jean-Paul Laurens and Paul Brady. Blashfield became internationally known for his murals at the World’s Colombian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago and became one of America’s most prominent muralists. His work entitled the Evolution of Civilization adorns the dome of the reading room in the Library of Congress in Washington D.C. and his work decorates state capitals in the Midwest and courthouses as well as private homes on the East Coast. In recognition of his artistic achievements Blashfield was made president of the National Academy of Design later in his life. His artwork is distinguished by its size as well as its humanistic and neo-classical qualities. |
