Cohen, George(American, 1919-1999)
George Cohen was an American surrealist born August 4, 1919 in Chicago, Illinois where he would study and work as an art professor for many years. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago where he was awarded the Isaacs Scholarship in 1938 and the Coolbaugh Scholarship in 1939. In 1940 he served as the president of the Art Students League of New York. In 1941 his academic career was interrupted for military service, which lasted from 1941 to 1946. He completed his degree from the Art Institute in 1946 upon his return from the military. From 1946-1948 he studied at Drake University and the University of Chicago, where he completed residence work for his M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History. He worked as a professor at Northwestern University from 1948 until his retirement in 1984. He served as guest professor at the Contemporary Art Workshop in Chicago and the Institute of Related Art in Wilmette in 1951, the Evanston Art Center from 1951-1952, the Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology from 1956-1957, and the Minneapolis Museum of Art in 1963. He received numerous awards throughout his career including the Copley Award, the National Foundation of the Arts Award, a Ford Arts Council Award, a Guggenheim Fellowship and the State of Illinois 150th Anniversary Award. His works are included in the permanent collections of various institutions including the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Carnegie Mellon Museum in Pittsburgh, the Minneapolis Museum of American Arts and the Hirschhorn Collection in Washington D.C.
