Continental School
Often paintings or other fine art items are left unsigned or they are signed indistinctly. When this happens the trained art researcher will categorize the item within a genre among artists who are from a similar place or utilize the style, technique, and subject matter that place is known for.
The Continental School genre, as the name suggests, focuses on subject matter that is recognizably from Europe, but can be as variable as an oil on canvas depiction of the English landscape or a Parisian cityscape. The Continental school is most often associated with the late 19th century and early 20th century.
