Faggi, Alfeo(Italian, 1885-1966)
Born in Florence, Italy in 1885, Alfeo Faggi was the son of a Fresco painter who had an early love for art. He trained both with his father and for 5 years at the Academia Belle Arti in Florence before moving to Chicago with his family in 1913. His works are primarily sculptures with religious themes. While in Chicago, he experienced favorable response to his works, which lead to several private commissions. In 1932 he moved to Woodstock, New York with his wife and children where he died in 1966. Today, many of his works are housed in churches and universities around the country. Such institutions include the Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, in Chicago, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Dominican University, River Forest, Illinois. The Renaissance Society, University of Chicago sponsored one of his first one-man exhibitions and major exhibitions of his have been held at the Art Institute of Chicago, Ferragil Gallery, and the Albright Gallery in Buffalo, New York.
