Greek School(20th Century)
Greek art of the 20th century utilized classical themes that originated in Greece but was not encumbered by them. Drawing inspiration from the country’s rich cultural, architectural and environmental heritage, artists of the 20th century Greek School applied new forms of artistic expression formulated in Europe to their own artistic output. In dialogue with the artistic movements that developed in France and Germany, Greek artists incorporated these stylistic elements and developed them in relation to local and mythological subject matter. Greek art of the time also captured the many historic changes that surrounded the newly independent Greek state which had been under Ottoman rule for hundreds of years.
