| | Paul Henry was born in Belfast, Ireland. There he studied art before going to Paris in 1898 to study under Whistler. He returned to Ireland, which became his inspiration. He captured the play of light on the Irish landscape and became Ireland's best-known artist. In 1919, he moved to Dublin where - along with several other painters including Jack B. Yeats and Mary Swanzy he founded the Society of Dublin Painters. By this time, Henry's style of painting began to focus on pure landscapes typically comprising mountains, a lake and some cottages, topped by a sky which takes up half the painting. In 2004 the National Gallery of Ireland held a major exhibit of his work. |
