| | Krafft, Carl Rudolph | (American, 1884-1938) |
|
| | Carl Rudolph Krafft was born on August 23, 1884 in Reading, Ohio. He lived and worked in Chicago area from 1890-1938. Here he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts. From 1915 until his death, he taught art at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Carl R. Krafft Outdoor School of Painting, and the Oak Park Art League. He was the founder of the Municipal Art League, the Society of Painters of the Forest Preserve, the Society of Ozark Painters, and the founder and president of the Oak Park Art League. | | Krafft is frequently named an Ozark Painter. However, in his later life, he attempted to combat this label as to establish more universal, rather than regional success. His paintings often portray soft and misty landscapes of American countryside. During the Great Depression, copies of his paintings were sold as authentic and so he began leaving his thumbprint next to his signature in order to ensure authenticity. He died in Oak Park, Illinois on October 18, 1938. | | Works Cited: | | www.krafft.us | | opal-art.com/historical/krafffall.htm | | Carl R. Krafft: An Artist’s Life by Gladys Krafft Davies |
