| | Joan Mitchell was born in Chicago on February 12, 1925. She studied at Smith College in Massachusetts, the Art Institute of Chicago, and Columbia University in New York. She is an Expressionist painter who focuses primarily on landscapes using vibrant colors and violent brushwork. She traveled throughout France, Spain, and Italy and eventually moved to France where she died on October 30, 1992. Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cézanne, Wassily Kandinsky, Franz Kline, and Willem de Kooning heavily influenced her art. She is noted for being one of very few female painters of her era to receive critical acclaim and success. The Joan Mitchell Foundation is an organization, which gives scholarships to art students.
