Orr, Louis(American, 1879-1961)
Born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1879, Louis Orr is a master print maker whose works focus on architecture, particularly bridges and cathedrals in Paris, where he spent most of his professional life. Born from a long line of engravers and printers, he pursued a career in art after studying at Hartford Art School, the Art Students League, and at the Academie Julian in Paris. In 1940, Orr was commissioned to create a series of 50 plates, which he completed over a series of 12 years, of various historical sites around North Carolina, which now hang in museums, libraries and courthouses throughout the state. Institutions including the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Boston Museum of Art, and the Smithsonian Institute have purchased his works. He died in 1961.
