Rich, Cathal Byrne (American, c.1930-2007)
Born in Chicago in the 1930s, Cathaleen Byrne Rich grew up in New York before returning to Chicago with her family after World War II. Art was always an influence in her life because father was a Prairie School architect and her mother was an artist. She attended the School of the Art Institute where she received her Bachelor’s Degree and received advanced degrees in education from Newton College, Newton, Massachusetts. Throughout her life she worked in education activism in Oak Park, Illinois. In 1984, she and two other women founded a group called Limina, which still exists today. Limina’s mission is to validate and inspirit the lives of women, particularly during times of transition. She brought her skill as both an artist and psychotherapist into the group. Besides being devoted to her work, Rich was also a mother of six children and a surrogate mother to many others. Toward the end of her life, she experienced some personal tragedy in the death of two of her children and of her second husband. She died in her Oak Park home on September 25, 2007. Her works typically contain rich and vibrant colors and depict nature, women, or goddesses.
