Shapleigh, Frank Henry (1842-1906)
Frank Henry Shapleigh was born in Boston in 1842 and died in Jackson, New Hampshire in 1906. Shapleigh enjoyed a prolific career as an artist in mostly the New England area. He began studying the arts at the Lowell Institute Drawing School in Boston and briefly in Paris between 1866-1869. Shapleigh’s career was put on hold during the Civil War as he joined the Union Army from 1862-1863.
Frank Shapleigh artistic career came into focus when he first visited the White Mountains in 1866. The majority of Shapleigh’s work came from areas in and around the White Mountains where he would paint areas that were very personal to him and areas that he could sell to tourists. His works from these areas are mostly very intimate and personal which shows how much this area meant to him as an artist.
During the winter, Shapleigh lived in St. Augustine Florida to paint the various areas around his home. These works focus on buildings in and around his residence. These works show that he was very skilled in painting architecture.
