van Rijn, Rembrandt(Dutch, 1606-1669)
Born in Leiden, The Netherlands on July 15, 1606, Rembrandt is considered a master of Western Art. His schooling bored him and he dropped out at an early age to study art in Amsterdam. He was barely 22 years old when we took on hi first pupils. His marriage to Saskia van Uylenburgh enhanced his career greatly as she was the cousin of a successful art dealer. He began being commissioned for portraits, which would later become his most important genre. In addition to portraits, Rembrandt attained fame for his landscapes and as an etcher he ranks among the foremost of all time. When he had no other model, he painted or sketched his own image. It is estimated that he painted between 50 and 60 self-portraits. Together they give us a remarkably clear picture of the man, his looks, and — more importantly — his emotions, as misfortune and sorrow etched wrinkles in his face.Among the prominent characteristics of his work are his command of light and dark, often using stark contrasts, thus drawing the viewer into the painting; his dramatic and lively scenes, devoid of any rigid formality that contemporary artists often displayed; and his ostensibly deeply felt compassion for mankind, irrespective of wealth and age.He died October 4, 1669, in his native country of Holland.
